Some members of the Eastern Assam Chamber of Commerce and Industry have submitted a memorandum to Dibrugarh deputy commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha seeking action against alleged unlawful and illegal activities of its office-bearers.

According to the memorandum, the chamber was being run arbitrarily and illegally by the president and the secretary in connivance with other working committee members even after expiry of their terms. The committee members are illegally holding positions in the chamber for the last 20 years violating the rules and regulations, it said.

“No ordinary annual general meeting, required under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, has been requisitioned and called for several years. No audited accounts have been circulated and passed in the past several years. No auditor has been appointed in the last 20 years,” it said.

It also alleged that no election to the working committee has been conducted for more than 20 years.

“No annual report of the activities has been presided/circulated among the members of the chamber. No books of accounts have been maintained. The working committee have been collecting the membership fee/subscription fee illegally in cash only in gross violation of Income Tax Act, 1961. The bank account of the chamber has become dorman,” it said.

Eastern Assam Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Bhudev Phukan said on Thursday, “Many of them who submitted the memorandum have not renewed their membership. Yes, we could not conduct the election for some reason. But there has been no violation on our part.”
