Gauhati High Court on Tuesday deferred the hearing on the bail plea of National Democratic Front of Boroland (R) chief Ranjan Daimari till March 5.

Daimari had surrendered before the Guwahati Central Jail authority on February 20, following a high court directive as the validity of his four-week interim bail had ended. He was released on interim bail on January 24 to participate in the signing of the Bodo Accord on January 27.

Daimari’s counsel Manas Sarania said, “The bail hearing was not completed today. The court has fixed March 5 for the next hearing.”

Daimari was sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment last year for the 2008 Assam serial bomb blasts that killed over 90 people and left about 400 injured.

A series of blasts were triggered by the Daimari-led outfit in Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Barpeta Road on October 30, 2008. The CBI had probed the case.

The new Bodo Accord provides for withdrawal of criminal cases registered against NDFB members for non-heinous crimes. However, cases registered in connection with heinous crimes shall be reviewed on case-by-case basis.

After the pact was signed, 1,615 cadres of the NDFB’s four factions, led by Daimari, Govinda Basumatary, Dhiren Boro and B. Saoraigwra, laid down arms and joined the mainstream on January 30.

After Daimari was sent behind the bars last week, several Bodo groups demanded his release for the “success of the accord” and in the hope that he would play a vital role in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls scheduled for April.
