The death of three Hmar community youths in custody of Assam police on July 17 has reached the Gauhati High Court.

Acting on a writ petition filed by the deceased families, the high court on Wednesday issued notices to six senior state officials, including the chief secretary, police chief and home commissioner, Cachar DC, SP and the Lakhipur police station OC.

The court has also directed the Cachar district administration to keep the bodies of the deceased in the Silchar Medical College morgue till an order is passed on the petitioners’ plea to get the post-mortem done by doctors from outside Assam. The matter will come up for hearing on Friday.

The death of — Lalungawi Hmar, 21, and Lalbiekkung Hmar, 33, from Assam’s Cachar district and Joshua Lalrinsang, 35, from strife-hit Manipur’s Pherzwal district — have triggered protests in Manipur and Assam.
