The Opposition in Assam disrupted Assembly proceedings on Friday seeking action against a Maharashtra MLA who had suggested sending stray dogs from that state to Assam, falsely claiming dog meat is eaten here.
The issue was raised by Congress MLA and PCC working president Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha when governor Gulab Chand Kataria was giving his speech on the first day of the budget session.
Purkayastha said: “An MLA has said in the Maharashtra Assembly that people of Assam consume dog meat. It is my demand that action be taken against him. He should be arrested. It is a sentimental matter.... It is an insult to the people of Assam.”
Bachchu Kadu of the Prahar Janshakti Party had purportedly made the suggestion in the Maharashtra Assembly during a discussion on the stray dog menace.
Kadu was among the MLAs who had camped in Guwahati last year with Eknath Shinde, when he split the Shiv Sena and toppled the Uddhav Thackeray government.
