The Golaghat district administration has geared up to materialise the Election Commission’s tagline for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls: No voter to be left behind.

As part of the drive, it organised a programme at the District Library in Golaghat on Saturday for differently-abled voters.

The Digital Voters’ Literacy programme was moderated by district election officer Kukila Gogoi and assistant commissioner Papu Gogoi.

The district election officer said the administration would provide free transport to the specially-abled voters on polling day.

He said there are 1,200 differently-abled voters in the Golaghat and Khumtai Assembly constituencies, which are a part of the Kaliabor parliamentary constituency.

Deputy commissioner Dhiren Hazarika urged all differently-abled voters to exercise their franchise freely and fairly. He assured them of all cooperation for casting their votes on April 11.

The voters were imparted hands-on training on using the electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) system.

An official of the Upper Assam Physically Challenged Persons Association, Biswa Bijoy Bora, said they were happy with the initiatives taken by the district administration.

“We will cast our votes without any hesitation and complexity to build a great nation,” he said.

He said voters with physical disabilities were often left out earlier because of negligence or difficulty in accessing entry to polling booths.

“This time we will be able to vote freely as the district administration will provide free transport to the booths,” he added.

“For the first time, the district administration has made such efforts for us. We are very happy,” Ranu Doley, a specially-abled voter, said.

Another voter, Rinku Karmakar, said she was satisfied with the arrangements and would vote on April 11.

Mousumi Gogoi, yet another voter, said she would be happy to cast her vote on polling day.

The differently-abled voters were also felicitated by the district administration.

The training was imparted by master trainer Akram Hussain. The programme was organised in collaboration with the Common Service Centre (CSC), Golaghat.

The poor turnout by voters with physical disabilities in earlier elections was viewed seriously by the commission and it selected the tagline for inclusion of all voters in the election process.
