A team of Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), Joint Movement Against Citizenship Amendment Bill (JMACAB), a forum of different tribal political parties and civil society bodies, and Tripura’s royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Deb Burman on Thursday met Union home minister Amit Shah and sought to scrap the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The leaders of JMACAB decided to call off their protest for the time being, after getting an assurance from chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb that he arrange a dialogue with Shah on Wednesday.

Forum leader Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl said, “We met Amit Shah today and expressed our concern. He assured us that whatever that he will surely try to do whatever is possible from his end.”

A delegation of IPFT also met Shah and raised the same issue. “He said he will protect our culture and identity,” IPFT general secretary Mevar Kumar Jamatia said.

Deb Burman said he told the home minister that the bill cannot be implemented in Tripura as it is a complete violation of the instrument of accession.

Shah later tweeted, “Met with delegations of IPFT and Joint Movement Against CAB from Tripura and discussed their concerns over CAB. Modi government will try to solve their issues in a positive way.”
