A special team of Tripura police arrested former state chief secretary Yashpal Singh on Monday morning from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Singh was absconding for the past four months in connection with an alleged Rs 600-crore graft case in the public work department (PWD) in 2008-09.

A special team of Tripura police went to Uttar Pradesh to locate Singh and bring him back for trial, an official said.

Additional director-general police (crime branch) Puneet Rastogi confirmed that Singh was apprehended by a special team of Tripura police on Monday morning from Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

“He will be produced in court there and we will have to obtain custody warrant from there. The process is on,” Rastogi told The Telegraph.

Singh, who had served as the chief secretary in the previous Left Front government, was booked along with former PWD minister Badal Choudhury and former chief engineer Sunil Bhowmik by the crime branch on October 13.

Both Bhowmik and Choudhury were released on bail 87 days after they were arrested since Tripura police were unable to submit a chargesheet against them to the court.

Choudhury, who served four terms in the Left Front government as PWD minister, was booked in an FIR registered at West Agartala police station on October 13. He was absconding for six days before he was arrested from the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Agartala.

Though no comments came from Bhowmik or Singh about the charges against them till now, Choudhury, repeatedly alleged that the case against him is baseless and politically motivated.

A senior police official, “We have detained Singh from IRS Apartments, Indirapuram at Ghaziabad and brought to Indirapuram police station and after verification he was arrested at 11.05am. Now, we have kept him at Kavi Nagar police custody of Ghaziabad. Tomorrow (Tuesday) morning we will produce him at chief judicial magistrate court Ghaziabad for transit remand”.
