Five crude bomb-like items were recovered from Panikhaiti locality in Chaygaon in Assam’s Kamrup district, 46km from here, on Wednesday, triggering panic.

Kamrup police, who are on the alert ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the state on Friday, rushed to the spot and recovered the bombs which were kept in a bag.

“The bomb squad was alerted and they destroyed the items at an isolated place in the presence of a magistrate without ascertaining the contents of the bag as they did not want to take any chance. The squad later said the destroyed items may have contained chemicals used in firecrackers,” a source in the Assam police said.

A preliminary probe revealed that the items were left by a group of people who had come to the village to assault one Buddheswar Choudhury and his family members.

The police said five people, Babul Mandal, his father Buddhi Mandal and three others, came to Choudhury’s house in the wee hours on Wednesday and attacked him, his daughter, Rekha, and son, Lokhen, with machetes and knives.

When the family raised an alarm and neighbours responded to their cries, the attackers fled the spot, leaving behind a two-wheeler and a bag containing the bomb-like items.

The investigation also revealed that Rekha was married to Babul, a resident of nearby Boko.

Rekha had left Babul and returned to her father’s house following marital discord.

“The confrontation between the two parties happened because of personal reasons but the fact that the bomb-like items were with them needs to be investigated properly. Chaygaon police station has registered a case,” a police source said.
