The organisers of two festivals in the south Kamrup area have cancelled events scheduled for next month due to the protests across the region against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

The fourth edition of the Drone-Sree-Dilma River Festival at Ukiam under Chaygaon constituency was scheduled to be held from January 9 to 12 while the 10th edition of the Chandubi Festival under Palashbari Assembly constituency was scheduled to be held next year from January 1 to 5. Both the places are located along the Assam Meghalaya border.

The president of the Chandubi Festival organising committee, Jivan Rabha, said the event had been cancelled keeping in mind uncertainty in the wake of protests.

The committee members said they supported the gana satyagraha against the CAA and respected the youths who had lost their lives during the agitation.

They added that on January 1, 2020, the committee would only flag off the festival, but other programmes had been cancelled.

The organising committee of the Drone-Sree-Dilma River Festival, which was planned to be organised in a bigger and unique way, met at Ukiam recently and decided against going ahead with the event.

The general secretary of the organising committee, Suneet P. Marak, said: “It is unfortunate as this time we had planned to make the festival unique by including more indigenous communities apart from conveying a message for a plastic-free environment. But given the uncertainty amid the unrest across the country, the committee decided to cancel the festival this year.”
