Darrang police arrested a man on Tuesday for allegedly murdering his own children.

A police source said the accused has been identified as Nazrul Islam, who threw his two children into a pond behind his house at Dalgaon in the district late on Monday night.

The children were identified as Eyadul Hussain Islam, 5, and Noor Saheda, 4.

The police said, according to the villagers, Haque used to physically abuse the children almost daily.

On Monday also he was beating his children over certain family issues, while the mother, who was used to these fights, ignored them and was cooking in the kitchen within the premises of the house.

However, after beating the children, he pushed them into a pond where both the children drowned.

The police suspect the children were already dead when he threw them in the pond, so they did not shout for help.

The bodies of the children were recovered on Tuesday morning when a villager noticed a body floating in the pond.

When other villagers came to check, they found that it a body of a girl child.

The villagers immediately informed the police and after they arrived they pulled out both the bodies.

The police are currently interrogating Islam. He has not confessed to his crime yet. They also suspect the mother of the children, out of fear, did not report the matter.
