Chaturanga, a socio-cultural organisation, will organise a three-day Basanta Natyaotsav at Patharkandi in south Assam’s Karimganj district from March 7.

Founder of the organisation, Siddhartha Sekhar Paul Choudhury, told this correspondent on Sunday that the main objective of the festival was to promote drama and showcase the rich culture and tradition of Barak Valley.

“This will most probably be for the first time that drama groups of Tripura and Bangladesh will take part in such a festival in Karimganj. The event will witness performances by five drama groups of Karimganj district. Preparations are in full swing. The news of the event has already generated a lot of excitement among people here. We are expecting a fantastic experience,” he said.

On March 7, drama group Bishwabina of Karimganj will present Statue. Kul Bhanga Manu will be performed by Renaissance of Kailasahar, Tripura.

On March 8, Poron — The Balashop of Karimganj will present Ghorpora followed by Yashomati and Bhula by Learners of Dharmanagar, Tripura and Nabadiganta Sanskritik Sangstha of Karimganj respectively.

On March 9, the final day of the mega fest, Platform and Swarnamrig will be staged by the Theatre Commune of Karimganj and Bahurupi of Karimganj respectively.

Little Theatre of Bangladesh will perform Bhaibe Radharaman.

Choudhury said folk dance and sit-and-draw competitions and a fancy dress contest would be organised at daytime during the three-day fest, which will be held at Premamayi Senior Basic Model School in Patharkandi.

Chaturanga’s annual magazine Cheton will also be released and some noted dramatists and musicians will be felicitated as part of the event.

Chaturanga, which received an award in Calcutta in 1999 for its drama Beda (fence), participated in the four-day international 7th Mohan’s Rang Mahotsav in Goa last year.

The organisation started its journey in 1978.

It has staged over 100 plays, including Fokirer Pathor, Laxmi Manik, Moner Byadhi, Dongshan and Chokhe Angul Dada among others.
