Doctor family seeks safety in Doomdooma

A case under has been registered at Teok police station following Dutta’s death and several suspects booked

The family of Dr Deben Dutta on Monday urged Jorhat district police to ensure their security following the doctor’s death.

Dutta, 73, a retired physician, was allegedly lynched by a mob on August 31 after a patient died at Teok tea estate hospital in Jorhat district.

Following the incident, Dutta’s family moved to their residence at Teok Jogduar town along National Highway 37, around 4km from Teok tea estate.

The seven-member family includes Dutta’s widow Aparajita, son Monjil Dutta, daughter-in-law Mallika Dutta,daughter Kristeena Dutta Saikia, son-in-law Karan Prasad Saikia, and grand children Dipyaghni Dutta and Vidit Saikia.

“We request Jorhat police to provide us with adequate security to avert any untoward incident. We feel insecure after the incident,” Karan Prasad Saikia told The Telegraph.

“We feel unsafe even if we see a stranger roaming around our house. The district administration should step up the security measures,” he added.

A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered at Teok police station following Dutta’s death and several suspects booked. An investigation is on.

Jorhat superintendent of police Nimbalkar Vaibhav Chandrakant told The Telegraph, “There is absolutely no threat to the family. Local police are continuously monitoring the situation and in constant touch with them.”

Dr Prabin Chandra Thakur, a health officer employed by Rossell India Limited-owned Dikom tea estate hospital in Dibrugarh district, was brutally manhandled on May 6 by a group of garden workers following the death of a woman employee.
