Deputy commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha launched the Adopt zero-waste lifestyle, an orientation-cum-awareness programme, here on Saturday to reduce the volume of municipal waste and convert it to resources.
The initiative has been taken by the district administration in association with the public health and engineering department.
The meeting, held in the conference hall of the deputy commissioner’s office, was attended by Dibrugarh legislator Prasanta Phukan, district development commissioner Sanjoy Dutta and superintendent of police Gautam Bora, among others.
Jha highlighted the importance of promoting zero-waste lifestyle. “The quantum of municipal solid waste generated in Dibrugarh is estimated to be around 60 metric tonnes per day. Through this programme, we want to create awareness on zero-waste lifestyle,” he added.

The programme organisers have constituted a solid waste management team to provide counselling on how to manage waste at home. The team will visit every house in the district,” Jha said.
The executive engineer of the public health engineering department, Bhaskarjyoti Sarma, spoke about the method of producing organic compost by using biodegradable waste at home and developing rooftop kitchen or garden.
