Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia on Friday sought chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s assistance for specialised treatment of Sanidul Islam, a class X student who had received a bullet injury during the December 12 protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Saikia, after visiting Sanidul’s home here on Thursday, wrote to Sonowal on Friday.

“The state of Sanidul’s health is far from satisfactory. I met the lad yesterday at the premises rented by the family in the city and discovered that his left hand is paralysed. Moreover, his reactions/reflexes are perceptibly slow,” Saikia said in his letter.

He said Sanidul, who was supposed to sit for matriculation examination in March this year, was one of those injured in police firing at Hatigaon in Guwahati on December 12. He had received bullet injuries in the head and was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital from where he was released on December 20.

Assam cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had told the Assembly on January 13 that the police had no other option at that time.

Saikia wrote, “Sanidul is a student. As a result of police action, he is bed-ridden at a time when he ought to have been preparing for the examination which will shape his future.”

Mentioning that Sanidul’s father was a man of modest means, Saikia urged Sonowal to “immediately provide requisite financial and logistical assistance” so that the boy may avail of specialised treatment at a hospital like AIIMS in Delhi.

“I am sure you will agree that this is the least your government can do to discharge its moral responsibility,” he added.
