Erosion threatens villages in Bokakhat

There was heavy erosion on the northern part of National Highway-37 in Bokakhat Assembly constituency in Upper Assam’s Golaghat district on Wednesday.

Due to incessant rain in the past few days, the water level of the Brahmaputra has increased, causing continuous erosion.

The embankment on the streamlet Alengmari under Disoi gaon panchayat (GP) of Uttar Mahura mouza was totally breached by floodwaters which submerged Boro paddy field in the Riri areas on Wednesday.

Erosions in areas such as Riri, Lohore, Teliyabari under Dishoi GP of Bokakhat subdivision have made residents of as many as 50 families helpless.

The sluice gate on Nikari Jaan, a streamlet, was washed away by the Gelabeel river and vast areas such as Gutung, Baligaon, Nikari, Bamun chapori are on the verge of submergence.

The embankment on Naramari Jaan is also under threat due to swirling floodwaters. If the embankment is damaged, hundreds of bighas of paddy crops will be under water.

The Bokakhat agricultural subdivisional officer Ranjit Sarma visited the areas on Thursday.
