Curfew in Hailakandi district of south Assam's Barak Valley was extended till 7am on Monday in view of the tense situation in the district following Friday’s group clash here.

Barring a few minor incidents, no violence was reported over the past 24 hours.

However, a high-level meeting of the administration here felt the situation continued to be fragile in the district and decided to extend the curfew.

The army also staged a flag march in the town to prevent any untoward development.

Curfew was imposed in Hailakandi town at 1pm on Friday and across the district at 6pm the same day.

A meeting of the administration was held at the deputy commissioner's office here in the presence of additional director-general of police Mukesh Agrawal, Barak Valley commissioner Anwaruddin Choudhury, deputy inspector-general of police P.K. Dutta, Hailakandi deputy commissioner Keerthi Jalli, superintendent of police Mohneesh Mishra and top officers of CRPF and Assam Police.

Assam excise and forest minister Parimal Suklabaidya, Silchar MLA Dilip Kr Paul, Hailakandi MLA Anwar Hussain Laskar, Katlicherra MLA Suzam Uddin Laskar, Algapur MLA Nizamuddin Choudhury and Sonai MLA Aminul Haque Laskar also attended the meeting.

Agrawal, who has been camping in the town, told The Telegraph on Saturday evening that assistant sub-inspector Tinku Goswami had been put under suspension on charges of inefficient handling of the situation and an inquiry instituted against him.

The civil and police administration appealed to the people to maintain peace and tranquillity and not heed rumours.

The meeting further assessed the damage caused by the mob.

Clashes erupted following police canning a section of devotees who tried to offer Friday prayers on the road in front of an over-crowded mosque on SS Road here.

The devotees allegedly threw stones at police, prompting them to resort to a baton charge.

The mosque was overcrowded in response to a social media campaign against miscreants who allegedly damagedseats of motorbikes near the mosque two day earlier when the owners were offering prayers.

The clash left one person dead and at least 14 others seriously injured. They have been admitted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

Agrawal attended the janejah (funeral) of Jashim Uddin at his native village, Narayanpur, on the outskirts of Hailakandi on Saturday.

The Assam government has announced ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family of Jashim Uddin and a job for a family member, minister Parimal Suklavaidya said. Those injured will be treated free of cost and the government has extended financial grants of Rs 50,000 to each of them, he added.

AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal and the state unit of the BJP have appealed to the people to maintain peace during the month of Ramazan.
