IIT Guwahati checks feasibility of online work for interns

IIT Guwahati had ordered suspension of all academic, co-curricular, extra-curricular activities till May 14

IIT Guwahati is consulting companies for the students who have got internships to assess the feasibility of the work-from-home model.

It has also stated that despite the uncertain situation prevailing right now because of Covid-19 pandemic, the placements have not been impacted so far.

“With the coronavirus-related lockdown being extended till May 3, IIT Guwahati will be compliant with the lockdown rules and regulations. The institute has been conducting online courses of all the theory courses (more than 350) since April 4 and is likely to complete them by May 15. The institute has tentatively scheduled examinations for July. It will welcome the incoming students for the new session in August 2020,” said a statement of the institute released on Tuesday.

As part of preventive measures against the spread of Covid-19, IITG had ordered suspension of all academic, co-curricular, extra-curricular activities till May 14.

The statement said, “Even in the current uncertain situation, the institute is happy to note that placements have not been impacted so far. No offers, domestic or international, have been withdrawn. However, a few companies have postponed the date of joining. For internships, the institute is consulting the companies to assess the feasibility of work-from-home model. The institute is doing everything in its capacity to support students during this critical period.”

Altogether 485 placed out of 561 registered students (approximately 87 per cent) of BTech and BDes (bachelor’s degree in Design) students this year.

A total of 177 MTech and MDes were placed out of 353 registered students (more than 50 per cent). Five other students from MSc, MS(R) and PhD also got placements.

IIT Guwahati has been also providing scientific support, extending sophisticated instrument facilities and developing life-saving equipment for the state and Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, in the fight against Covid-19.
