In the wake of the outbreak of the coronavirus, Udalguri-based dramatist Ram Upadhyay, who is in his late thirties, has attempted to educate unlettered villagers by presenting a monologue in a video broadcast that is doing the rounds on social media.

His unique way to make people understand the importance of maintaining “social distancing” and wearing safety gears while stepping out for buying essentials and emergency works, has won many hearts.

In the nine-minute broadcast, he presents his self-penned monologue on coronavirus titled Corona Warrior. He is equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE) and mask donning a doughnut-shaped bamboo made circle.

Talking to this correspondent, he said, “Though most of the city-dwellers have been following the rules of self-quarantine and lockdown, I was quite shocked to learn that some people in villages are still stepping out in public places. So, I decided to pen down my thoughts and record it with rhymes laden with emotions for a smooth monologue. I ardently believe that drama, as an art form and pedagogy, is one of the powerful mediums of education which not only commands people’s attention but also entertains and educates them.”

“Through the video broadcast I also attempted to specifically reach out to the children and those flouting social-distancing norms in grocery stores and banks as they are at higher risk of getting infected,” he added.

“People must make the best use of the lockdown, remain indoors, learn new life skills and spend time with their families and loved ones.”

Praising Upadhayay for his unique effort, Rewati Raman Sapkota, a teacher in Udalguri, said: “He is known for monologues in his dramas for long and this time around he used it for a great cause to spread awareness in critical times. We are very happy that he has taken such a unique effort in the greater interest of society.”
