At a time when Assam reels under coronavirus pandemic, lives of daily wage earners have become miserable. But there is always a ray of hope. A do-gooder teacher stood by them in this hour of crisis.

The headmaster of Wokha Christan LP School under East Education block in Golaghat district, Ratneswar Hazarika, offered food to 30 needy families of Matikhola gaon panchayat, 100km off Bokakhat town in Golaghat district on March 31.

Hazarika filled a cart with rice, potatoes, dal, salt packets and tomatoes. The total cost was Rs 5,070. He himself pulled the cart. Talking to this correspondent, Hazarika said: “Serving society gives me immense satisfaction. We, the teachers, should have a social commitment.”

Families of Bijoy Telenga, Bijoy Nayak, Ramen Konwar, Toffique Ali, Baghar Ali, Amulya Kurmi, Poona Bora and other daily wage earners did not know how to react.

“We are grateful to the teacher for his kindness. He stood by us during these hard days,” one of them said.

Hazarika was the secretary of Golaghat District Sahitya Sabha, a district branch of Asam Sahitya Sabha, the apex literary organisation of Assam, for several years.
