The 391 students from Assam, who were stranded at the coaching hub Kota in Rajasthan, reached Assam safely on Sunday and were immediately quarantined after primary check-up.

The students were screened for Covid-19 on entering Assam at Srirampur border.

Till the filing of this report no student was found having any symptom of coronavirus and all were sent to Guwahati for the quarantine arrangements at the Sarusajai facility.

They started the 2,000km homeward journey from Kota on Friday in 17 buses and passed through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Bengal during their journey.

Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the department would conduct their swab tests after five days.

They will be released from their quarantine only after they are declared fit by the doctors.

The students will have to bear the cost of the journey which is Rs 7,000 per head.

Sources said the government sent some police officers to Kota by a chartered flight to bring them back.

The officials who are conducting the “operation” will also be quarantined.

Sarma said the government would consider similar appeals of students from Assam stranded in other parts of the country. If they want to return in buses, the government will look for solutions such as making arrangements and acquiring permission for inter-state movement.
