Dinesh Das, 55, is stitching together protection for his fellow beings during the Covid-19 pandemic, making use of his skills as a tailor.

For when intentions are right, no occupation in life is too humble to be of help to humanity.

Das, a resident of Karimganj town in south Assam, has won the hearts of people for his noble deed.

Das took up the mission of distribution masks free of cost to the poor and disenfranchised people.

He runs a small shop, named Fashion Tailor, along Raj Bungalow Road adjacent to the India-Bangladesh border.

He usually faces a tough time to run his six-member family with the very limited income of tailoring.

On hearing an appeal to help others during the lockdown, Das became emotional and decided to help the poor people who can’t afford to buy masks to prevent being infected by coronavirus.

He started stitching the masks using his own resources and started distributing masks among cart pullers, rickshaw-pullers, daily-wage earners and beggars.

Das said, “I have distributed more than 1,000 masks among them. I stitch at least 30-50 masks per day and distribute these among the needy person. I feel for them because they can’t buy masks and they are prone to infection due to the nature of their job.”

The Karimganj branch of the Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari felicitated Das for his philanthropic activities. The district co-ordinator of the Kendra, Arup Roy, said Das had set a shining example for all sections of the people.

He said Das generally earned very little money through tailoring but he still managed to donate to others during a crisis.

“Das proved that if the person has a zeal to do something, nothing prevents him from doing so,” Roy added.
