The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) along with the fire and emergency services, Assam, have started to spray disinfectants in all public places to sanitise the streets and localities of the city to prevent outbreak of coronavirus.

A GMC official said the process of sanitisation started since Tuesday and was being carried out in a phased manner.

“Till now two areas have been covered,” he said.

The official added that Dispur was covered on Tuesday while on Wednesday the Guwahati Club Point was sanitised.

The areas near Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Bhangagarh will be covered from Thursday.

In order to carry out with the operation, the fire and emergency services have pressed into service four fire tenders to sprinkle disinfectants in the areas.

The GMC is also taking steps to ensure that the shops, which are permitted to remain open during the lockdown, maintain proper hygiene and the owners do not take illegal steps by hoarding essential commodities.

The GMC is also prepared to carry out eviction drives if vendors try to set up makeshift stalls without any authorisation during this period.

The police are also on patrol and each person found on the streets is being questioned on why they were out.

They are currently warning people of the consequences that they might have to face if they come out without any reason during this lockdown.

So far, there are no confirmed Covid-19 case in Assam, but strict measures are being undertaken.
