The Northeast Frontier Railway will run parcel trains from Guwahati to Dibrugarh and Guwahati to New Jalpaiguri on Sunday.
In the wake of Covid-19, it has been decided that the cancellation of all passenger train services shall be extended till May 17, as the nationwide lockdown has been extended till then.
“The movement of migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and persons stranded at different places will be carried out by the Shramik special trains,” an NFR official said. These special trains will be run from point-to-point on the request of state governments and according to the standard protocols for sending and receiving such stranded persons, he added.
The NFR has already operated more than 651 inbound freight trains during the lockdown period from March 25.
The kisan parcel train that runs between Guwahati and Dibrugarh with intermediate halt at Jagiroad, Chaparmukh, Hojai, Lumding, Diphu, Dimapur, Sarupathar, Farkating, Mariani, Simaluguri, Duliajan and New Tinsukia, plied on April 29 and 30 to meet the demands of the agriculture sector in Assam, official said.
“The NFR has transported more than 500 tonne of materials like sanitiser, masks, medicines, blood sample bags and other goods so that the flow of essential commodities can be ensured,” the official said.
