They were engaged in several activities as daily workers in Hojai but due to the lockdown they claimed that they were out of resources and money so they wanted to go home.

They managed to hire a local truck and were trying to move to Bengal through the Dhubri border but in Golakganj, they were intercepted by the police at a check post.

They were detained and the Bengal police were contacted but given the lockdown, the police said it was not possible to take them all back.

The Dhubri police then contacted Hojai police and sent them all back where they will be quarantined at their respected places with all possible resources.

A police source said the latest guidelines for the lockdown in the country have barred inter-state movement of people in any condition.

Only medical or essential services were allowed but no other reason could be proffered to travel inter-state. Even inter-district movement has been barred in the current situation to prevent any risk of the Covid-19 infection spreading.

Malda is 844km from Hojai, while Golakganj is 430km from Hojai. It takes around 18 hours by road to reach Malda from Hojai.
