The leader of Opposition of the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, on Saturday said the government has failed to provide proper relief to the people of Assam during the lockdown.

Saikia said in the past five weeks of the lockdown, the government has failed to give any scheme or initiative to make arrangements for food for the poor in Assam.

“The government relief seems to be very low and very few people have actually received it,” he added.

Saikia said if the situation continues, there are chances of the poor dying of hunger, which is a very alarming issue now.

The Congress leader said apart from this, people are running out of money and several have already been out of jobs since the lockdown. Several youths have been messaging him seeking a solution to the job problem.

“Most of them are out of money and there are no options left for these people. I feel that the government has failed to provide such security to the people of the state and the government should immediately take steps for this,” he added.

He further alleged that several people were given relief but that was also “politically motivated”.

There have been allegations that the BJP workers had “prepared” lists in distributing relief but that was also discriminatory.

Although several organisations are distributing relief to the poor, how long can this continue without the support or intervention of the government, he added.
