Several reports of attacks on policemen on duty and assault by police on violators of law during the lockdown period in Assam are raising deep concerns among top police officials and intellectuals across the state.
Till Thursday, 687 cases of lockdown violations were recorded by Tinsukia police. who collected a total of Rs 10,24,500 in fines.
However, no attack on police personnel were reported while enforcing the lockdown.
The police have arrested 3,449 people and seized 21,366 vehicles for lockdown violations across the state last month.
According to the information shared by Assam police last week, Rs 1.5 crore was collected in fines.
A total of 1,585 cases for lockdown violations have been registered at different police stations till April 29. The vehicles seized include 19,326 two-wheelers and 1719 four-wheelers.
Assam police have arrested 49 people, including a legislator for spreading fake information about Covid-19 on social media and registered 19 cases in different police stations.
Several district police have used drones to monitor the activities of the people.
On Wednesday, there were reports of police assault on Shambhu Shah of Dehing Bazar under Margherita police station in Tinsukia district. However, on Thursday, Shah said he hurt himself at the gate in front of his house which is “full of nails”.
Tinsukia superintendent of police Shiladitya Chetia told The Telegraph, “The matter was taken seriously and an inquiry was conducted in this regard. On Tuesday around 7pm, two police parties from Margherita police station were on patrol duty. When the police parties reached Dehing Bazar, they spotted some people on the road. As soon as they saw the police vehicles these people started running. While running, Shah got injured because of nails jutting out from the gate in front of his house.”
Incidents of attack on police also have been reported across the state.
At least four police personnel were injured in a mob attack and a police vehicle was damaged in Lakhimpur district recently.
“The situation is now under control and the police are enforcing the lockdown rules strictly,” Lakhimpur superintendent of police Rajveer Singh said.
“The people must abide by the rules and be positive towards the police. They are endangering their lives for us and country. At this time of crisis, lots of patience and change of attitude among people is the need of the hour,” Abhijit Khataniar, a social worker, said.
