The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) will organise a 10-day relief distribution from Thursday across the state among the poverty stricken and underprivileged people who have been further marginalised during the lockdown period.

“The economically backward people such as farmers, daily wage-earners, labourers, tea-labourers are suffering due to lack of essential commodities specially during the second phase of the lockdown. AASU wants to help them,” AASU secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said in a press release published on Wednesday from its state head office in Guwahati.

“So far, our activists were working silently for these people. We have even circulated helpline numbers and delivered medicines based on prescriptions.”

If AASU is not satisfied with the government relief, Lurinjyoti said: “The government was providing relief, but in many places relief items were not reaching. In some places, there are allegations of corruption against official. So, we have decided to come openly.” “The relief mission will be extremely organised and co-ver all the areas of the state. The regional and branch committees will implement the operation in their local areas,” he said.

The subsidiary committees are entrusted to select the beneficiary families and distribute relief. However, the committees will have to follow the government’s guidelines and maintain the social-distancing norms during their activities.

“The committees will follow the lockdown guidelines, he said.
