Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, on Thursday said once the Covid-19 pandemic is over, the Congress in Assam will hit the roads to protest against the “unconstitutional” Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019.

He also criticised the alleged interrogation of former Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain by the CID in connection with a CAA protest case.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Saikia said once the pandemic is over and it becomes all-ok-to-go-out, the Congress will come forward to protest against the unconstitutional CAA and all the other wrongs that the BJP-led government has been doing.

He added that it is seemed that the government is using police for political issues and is allegedly harassing the people who include Congress leaders as well as members of other regional organisations. “Whoever tries to criticise or raise a voice against this government gets prosecuted and the government tries to keep them behind the bars,” he added.

Saikia added that these acts by the current government seem to be pushing democracy and constitutional rights at threat. “We ask the government to keep the democracy and constitutional rights of the people alive in the country,” he added. “Since there has been a pandemic outbreak, we are focused in helping the needy persons of our state and country but once things turn back to normal we will once again protest with all spirit against the CAA.”
