The Opposition Congress is ready to corner the ruling BJP on the issue of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the daylong Assembly session on Monday.

The special session will be held to ratify the constitutional amendment to extend the reservation for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.

Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia said they would use the motion of thanks on the governor’s speech to raise its demand in the evening. The day will begin with governor Jagdish Mukhi’s address to the House.

The BJP leaders are not only supporting CAA but are also busy garnering public support, arguing that the beneficiaries of the Act will be not more than five lakh and claiming the party does not do anything which will be harmful to the people. The law will provide citizenship to persecuted non-Muslims from three neighbouring countries, who entered India before December 31, 2014, while the Assam Accord sets March 24, 1971, as the cut-off for detection and deportation of illegal immigrants. Earlier, Assam PCC president Ripun Bora said they would push for a resolution to exclude Assam from the Act’s purview.

The Congress had sought a special Assembly session on CAA several times but in vain. The party is opposed to CAA. It has promised that if it comes to power in the state, it would not allow implementation of CAA in Assam and pressure the Centre to revoke citizenship of those getting benefit of the law.

The Congress Legislature Party met here on Sunday evening to discuss its strategies for the daylong session.

The debate on the motion of thanks on the governor’s address will begin from 5pm.
