The Opposition Congress on Sunday said it will corner the ruling BJP-led government for its “failure to implement its last year budget promises” in this year’s session beginning on Monday.
“We will raise the government’s failures in implementing its promises made last year,” said Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia. The Congress held a meeting on Saturday to discuss issues to be raised in the session which will continue till March 30. The session will have 14 working days, while the budget will be presented on March 6.
The state government held a series of discussions with various organisations and community leaders to take their views to be reflected in the budget sessions.
This will be the last budget of the BJP-led government in Assam before the Assembly polls next year. Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently hinted at some populist measures to be included in the budget.
Making rice free from existing Rs 1 per kg and sugar and pulses at 50 per cent subsidy for tea garden workers and earmarking of Rs 1,500 crore to buy the state’s original shares of 26 per cent in the Numaligarh Refinery Limited are some measures likely to be included in the budget.
The Assam cabinet also recently approved a number of schemes for the tea garden community that are likely to be included in the budget. Among the cabinet decisions were Simon Sing Horo Special Scholarship scheme of Rs 10,000 each to High School Leaving Certificate and Higher Secondary-passed candidates, one-time financial assistance of Rs 25,000 for 15,000 youths and provisions for construction of pucca houses for workers of the Assam Tea Corporation Limited gardens at Rs 1.3 lakh per house.
