The Opposition Congress on Saturday accused Mizoram’s lone Lok Sabha member C. Lalrosanga of being a “traitor” for allegedly voting in favour of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in Parliament, and demanded his resignation.
In a statement, the Congress alleged that the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and Lalrosanga did not keep their pre-poll promise of opposing the bill. “The MNF fell into the BJP’s trap and sold Mizoram for a Hindu Rashtra,” it said. The party suggested that Lalrosanga should take moral responsibility and resign from his post.
The Congress said following the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, the BJP’s next target is introducing the uniform civil code, which will impact the culture, tradition and religion of the Mizos, across the country next year.
Evacuated
Mizoram information minister Lalruatkima on Saturday said the government was taking steps for the safe return of Mizos stranded in cities across the country because of the protest. He said the government has evacuated students and tourists to Mizoram houses and safer places and provided them with food. “They will be taken back to Mizoram once normalcy is restored in trouble-torn areas,” he said.
