The Assam Congress on Sunday slammed the BJP-led government in the state for not arresting party leaders who have allegedly made provocative statements.
“We want to ask the state government whether it thinks the law is equal for all or not. We have seen it cracking the whip on Ulfa leaders like Mrinal Hazarika and Jiten Dutta for their alleged provocative statements. But it has taken no action against those BJP leaders who have made provocative statements,” Assam PCC general secretary and senior spokesperson Apurba Bhattacharyya said.
Assam BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami on Saturday said the party’s state president Ranjeet Kumar Dass had written to the BJP parliamentary board, the party’s highest decision-making body, seeking disciplinary action against Hojai MLA Shiladitya Dev for repeatedly making provocative statements that could disturb peace and communal harmony in Assam.
Bhattacharyya said the BJP has invalidated the Assam Accord, a result of the six-year-long Assam Movement, by trying to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. “After the BJP came to power in the Centre and Assam the age-old social harmony that existed in the state has faced a threat. It is not the Congress, as Assam BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami had accused on Saturday, that has divided the country. It is the BJP which is doing so,” said Bhattacharyya.
“We want to ask the BJP why non-Hindu communities are facing harassment in a secular country like India. It is the BJP that is trying to divide the country on religious lines,” Bhattacharyya said.
