After poll-bound Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, the Congress is now pushing for a caste census in Assam.

The demand for the survey is going to intensify in the days to come, a state party leader said.

The Assam PCC on Sunday uploaded a video clip on X of party MP Gaurav Gogoi demanding a caste census for the uplift of the marginalised at a meeting organised by the Tai Ahom community on Saturday.

Reposting the tweet, Gogoi said he was demanding the caste census in Assam on the lines of the Bihar and Rajasthan model to ensure that the SC, ST, OBC and minority communities “receive dignity and justice”.

According to the 2011 census, the population of OBC in Assam is 25 per cent, SC 7.15 per cent, ST 12.45 per cent and general caste 54 per cent. Muslims make up 34.22 per cent of the state’s 3.2 crore population.

The Kaliabor MP said he was happy with the Congress government in Rajasthan going for the caste census and the Bihar government already having conducted the survey. The caste census is important to know the exact population of the communities and to know how much a community has progressed, he added.
