A clash between two communities in a Meghalaya village located close to the Bangladesh border left one person dead on Friday.
There are two conflicting reports on the sequence of events leading to the clash.
On Friday, leaders of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) and Federation of Khasi-Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP) went to Ichamati village to hold an anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act meeting.
KSU chief Lambokstarwell Marngar was stuck in the area till the filing of this report. Union general secretary Donald V. Thabah said the deceased was a KSU member.
The village falls under the Sohra civil sub-division of East Khasi Hills district, over 80km from here. The organisations have been holding meetings against CAA in different corners of Khasi-Jaintia hills since the passage of the bill in Parliament.
Although state government or police officials have not come up with a statement, reports from Ichamati said after the meeting concluded, a group of people, armed with sticks and machetes, cornered the activists, leading to a clash. Many KSU activists from Sohra, Shella and adjoining areas received injuries. One police officer was hit on his forehead.
Other reports say the activists allegedly started beating up people belonging to one community. They allegedly went inside Ichamati village and torched a haystack and tried to set a house on fire. This led to retaliation.
