Former Congress legislator Sushanta Borgohain has said his interrogation by CID, in connection with an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protest case, was an act of alleged political vendetta by the state government.

He was questioned by CID here on Wednesday in connection with case no. 30/2019 on allegation that he had contact with anti-CAA protester and Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha.

He was questioned for almost three hours. Borgohain told The Telegraph that he was questioned in connection with an anonymous FIR, which had no names mentioned and the CID summoned him without proper evidence.

“They should at least have had some valid point for calling me to Guwahati for questioning. They just called me based on a phone call dating back to April 2019, while the anti-CAA protests started in December 2019. It is mere harassment,” he said. “I did participate in an anti-CAA protest but that was when the entire country was protesting against it. Participating in a protest with our Congress members was done following all legal procedures and we had approval from the police and the administration,” he said.

Borgohain said the protest was peaceful. He claimed that he will keep protesting against the wrongdoings of the government and will not move from his stand against the “unconstitutional” CAA.

Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia urged the government not to use the police for political gains and asked it to refrain from unnecessarily harassing people who raise voice against the wrongdoings in the state as well as the country. “It’s a constitutional right to criticise the government and people cannot just be put behind the bars for that,” he added.

The APCC has also condemned the incident and asked the government to not harass people through the police.
