The All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA) on Friday said it would soon reach out to students of different schools and colleges of the valley and constitute its committees to work for the betterment of the student fraternity.
At a news conference here on Friday afternoon, the association’s adviser, Rupam Nandi Purkayastha, said they would approach students of educational institutions and constitute committees/units to work effectively for the rights and interests of students.
They would communicate with the students’ union of Assam University and take a slew of initiatives so that its students get the facilities they deserve. “One of the objectives of reaching out to students is to fight for their rights over issues like arbitrary fee hike and others,” he said.
Assam University, which came into existence in 1994, is located at Dargakona, around 20km from here and is the only university in south Assam.
Purkayastha cited the reference of the recent vigorous protests by the students union of Jawaharlal Nehru University over fee hike and said the Assam University Students’ Union should learn from the JNU students’ union how to come out on the streets and protest for their rights and interests.
He also condemned the recent attack on students and teachers of JNU and demanded that all those involved in the atrocious incident be arrested and sternly punished.
Members Sukamal Das, Nikita Banik, Joyshree Nath, Biswajit Deb were also present.
