BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav on Sunday said the party will retain power in Assam after the 2021 Assembly polls, cla-iming that the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests will not have any impact.

Madhav alleged that those who are against CAA are spreading misinformation and rumours on the Act, and the people had already rejected the Opposition’s claim that it was “unconstitutional”.

“The BJP and its allies will form the next government in Assam. The huge response at the recent peace rallies in Assam prove that CAA will have no impact on the election. People will vote for us for the development, performance and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Madhav told reporters.

Madhav said the report of the committee on implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord was yet to be submitted to the Centre. “As soon as the Centre receives the report, it will study it. A decision will then be taken on suggestions which can be implemented and incorporated. The state government is in the process of forwarding it to the Centre.”

The Centre constituted the 14-member high-powered committee in July 2019. Its report, finalised on February 10, has been with the Assam Accord implementation department since then.

The BJP had focussed on the implementation of Clause 6 during the anti-CAA protests, claiming it will protect the interests of Assam.

Madhav said the NDA had the numbers to win two out of three Rajya Sabha seats from Assam, elections to which will be held on March 26.

“Candidates will be announced in the next two to three days. We have commitments towards our ally and those will be honoured,” he said, hinting that one of the seats might be left for an alliance partner.

On the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls in April, Madhav said the state BJP unit will take a final call on a possible alliance.

On Megalaya governor Tatagatha Roy’s remark on the condition of non-tribals in Meghalaya, Madhav said, “There are certain issues with regard to safety and security of non-tribals in Meghalaya and these have been brought to the notice of the state government. The state government has taken steps for the security of all citizens, whether tribal or non-tribal, and they will be protected. The governor made some observations but the chief minister has also taken steps to bring peace.” Madhav said delimitation exercise will be undertaken soon in some northeastern states, including Assam. “It will be detailed and transparent as all stakeholders will be consulted,” he said.

Madhav claimed the NRC exercise in Assam was complete but when told that senior leader and minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had rejected it, he said: “You should ask him then.”

Sarma had said the state government had sought rejection of the final NRC published on August 31 last year.
