Border Security Force (BSF) constable Shiv Yogi Pandey was arrested from Station Road, Karimganj, on Wednesday and handed over to police within hours of his deserting the camp after allegedly killing a colleague and injuring another.

Pandey had fled on Tuesday night with his service rifle and in uniform after allegedly killing a head constable and injuring another at Lakhibazar border outpost in south Assam’s Karimganj town bordering Bangladesh.

Sources said Pandey had started quarrelling with two of his colleagues and in a fit of rage, he fired at Number 7 BSF Battalion head constable Ashok Kumar Kangaria of Himachal Pradesh and another head constable, Abhijit Ranjan Paul, of Karimganj, at 9.30pm on Tuesday with his rifle.

Both the officials were brought to Karimganj civil hospital where Kangaria was declared brought dead, while Paul was referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. His condition is reported to be critical.

Pandey escaped from the camp with his rifle after the incident.

The BSF and the police launched a massive operation on Tuesday night and was arrested on Wednesday morning.

It is learnt that Pandey was on the way to surrender before the police.

No detailed information was given to media by the security forces.

The incident inside the camp has sparked a sensation across Karimganj.

Sources said Pandey used to remain intoxicated on a regular basis and was also associated with many illegal activities.

It is presumed that Pandey got involved in a row with the two head constables over the issue of his illegal activities. Top police and BSF officials are tight-lipped about the incident, the source said.

An investigation is on by both the police and the BSF, source added.
