The Brus living in the six relief camps across the North district of Tripura will organise a daylong sit-in on December 13 in front of the office of the district magistrate and collector, Dharmanagar.

The refugees are also planning an indefinite sit-in in New Delhi next year demanding immediate resumption of relief and to draw the attention of the Centre to settle the issue.

A press release signed by Mizoram Bru Displaced Peoples’ Forum (MBDPF), president and general secretary of Mizoram Bru Indigenous Democratic Movement (MBIDM) Philip Apeto, said the MBDPF and the MBIDM held a joint meeting on Monday at Naisingpara under the chairmanship of A. Sawibunga.

In the meeting, the groups expressed their serious concern over the Brus who are the indigenous and bona fide citizen of Mizoram that they are unable to return to their homeland because of an unappeasable attitude of the government of Mizoram and its civil society.

“…. also, request the central government and state government of Tripura for immediate release of ration, cash-dole and other relief facilities as usual till all the displaced Brus are completely rehabilitated, including the arrears of cash-dole for the month of October and November as well as a ration for October 2019,” the press release stated.

The Centre stopped the rations on October 1 and six Bru refugees died of starvation alleged by the Bru leaders. Later, the Tripura government resumed it for the month of November and November 30 was also the deadline for the repatriation to Mizoram.
