The United Bodo People’s Organisation (UBPO), a civil society group, is looking forward to the next budget session of the Assam Assembly scheduled to be held from March 3 for introduction and passage of the bill for the new Boro Kachari Welfare Council.

The organisation is one of the core signatories to the Bodo pact signed between the Centre and the Bodo groups, including the All Bodo Students’ Union (Absu) and the four factions of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) in New Delhi on January 27.

General secretary of the organisation, Anil Basumatary, said: “We are elated that the group was part of the historic pact and its president Mihiniswar Basumatary signed the pact.”

He said the clauses of the accord included the formation of the Boro Kachari Welfare Council for the Boro Kachari people living outside the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) for their socio-economic development and protection of their linguistic and political rights. Basumatary added that an executive meet of the organisation was held on February 12 in Guwahati to discuss the proposed new council and strategies for planning and development.

The meeting thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and North East Democratic Alliance (Neda) convener Himanta Biswa Sarma for the pact.

Sources in Dispur said the bill for the Boro Kachari Welfare Council is likely to be brought during the next budget session. The UBPO hoped that all the clauses of the pact will be implemented in letter and spirit.
