The BJP-led Assam government on Monday regularised the appointment of 23,956 TET teachers as part of its pre-poll commitment to provide one lakh government jobs.

The appointment letters were handed over at a ceremonial function held here. The function was attended by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, education minister Ranoj Pegu and department officials.

The teachers belonged to the state pool and contractual categories working in Upper Primary and Lower Primary government schools since 2012.

While the Centre funds the contractual teachers under the Samagra Siksha Abhiyan, the state government funded the state pool of teachers.

“From today, they have become permanent and will enjoy the same salary and facilities that is due to regular teachers. It was a long-pending demand,” an official said.

Chief minister Sarma posted on X, “Assam has achieved another milestone. In 2021 we came to power promising 1 lakh Govt jobs. Today with the handover of 23,956 appointment letters, Assam has offered 1,24,345 jobs till date.”

“With this, we have fulfilled a long standing demand of our teachers. By May 2025 we will create 50,000 more jobs taking the total jobs to 2 lakhs. Each of these jobs have been delivered without a single instance of corruption,” Sarma added.

However, the ruling BJP had promised to give the jobs within a year of coming to power. The Opposition regularly flays the government for the delay in fulfilling its pre-poll promise.

Sarma further said his government will within the next three years post one-third women school teachers working in remote and difficult areas such as char and hills, to easily accessible schools for their safety and security.

He also said his government has created posts of 6,000 headmasters in lower primary schools, a post which will streamline the functioning of these schools.
