Activists of All Assam Students Union and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad, which have been spearheading protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, on Monday showed black flags to at least four BJP leaders in different parts of the state.

Black flags greeted minister of state for health Pijush Hazarika and Tezpur MP Pallab Lochan Das in Biswanath district on Monday afternoon when they were visiting Biswanath Chariali to review the preparations for the party’s public rally on Tuesday.

As soon as Hazarika and Das reached the Biswanath Chariali Municipal Board’s office, the AASU and AJYCP activists gathered in front of the office and registered their protest by showing black flags to the BJP leaders.

“We are not going to accept CAA. Those who have betrayed us and are trying to impose the law upon us forcibly will have to bear the brunt of the protests. We advocate peaceful and democratic protests and therefore, the BJP leaders will be shown black flags everywhere they go,” a protester said.

State panchayat and rural development minister Naba Kumar Doley and Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah too encountered a similar situation when protesters waved black flags at them in Upper Assam’s Lakhimpur district.

Sources said the leaders were going to attend a picnic organised by the BJP district unit but had to cancel the plan owing to the protests. Doley and Baruah faced similar protests at least twice more while on their way back. Later, police detained at least five members of the Lakhimpur district AASU unit in connection with the protest. They were released later.

State BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami said, “In a democracy, everyone has the right to protest as long as it is not violent.”

Meanwhile, the BJP has been preparing for its next phase of development march at Biswanath Chariali on Tuesday and unity march at Dhemaji on Wednesday. The BJP rallies are being seen as preparations for the 20121 Assembly elections.

On the other hand, anti-CAA protesters will also stage a protest at Dhemaji the same day the BJP organises its march.

On Sunday, BJP national vice-president Shivraj Singh Chauhan launched the party’s Jan Jagaran Abhiyan campaign to reach out to the people to whip up support for the Act. From Tuesday, the BJP workers will be going to the people and young leaders of their respective areas to build a mass consensus in favour of CAA.

The AJYCP and AASU have also announced they would greet Prime Minister Narendra Modi with protests if he visits the state to inaugurate Khelo India Youth Games on January 10.

AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai said, “If the Prime Minister reaches Guwahati, he will have to face protests. People of Assam will say Bhago Modi (run away Modi).”

Earlier, the AASU had also said that Modi would face massive protests if he visits Guwahati.

However, preparations are on in full swing to hold the third edition of the Games in the city successfully. Staff and officials have already started arriving here. The event will conclude on January 22.
