BJP national general secretary and Assam minder Ram Madhav on Sunday alleged that the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) are trying to seal an “unholy” alliance to fight the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, drawing flak from both the parties.

“The Congress and the AIUDF will face the BJP in the Lok Sabha election by sealing an unholy alliance. I am confident that the people of Assam will reject this unholy alliance,” Madhav said.

He said the Opposition parties in the country do not have the courage and the ability to face Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the elections for which they are forging alliances in whatever way they can, whether it is “holy or unholy”.

Assam PCC spokesperson and secretary Rhituporna Konwar told The Telegraph that the Congress will never make any alliance with the AIUDF. “We are going to fight the election in all the 14 seats. It is the communal BJP which has an understanding with the AIUDF, another communal party. We are determined to defeat both the BJP and the AIUDF,” he said.

AIUDF general secretary Aminul Islam denied Madhav’s statement and said there are no talks with the Congress about an alliance. “We do not have any alliance with the Congress and it will not happen. The people of Assam will give a fitting reply to the BJP, which supports the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, handed over Assam’s land to Bangladesh and opposed the Assam Accord,” said Islam.

Cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said both the parties share a common ideology, which is appeasement of a particular section of people. “Whether there will be cooperation or competition between the two parties will be known only after March 26, the last date of filing of nominations for the second phase,” Sarma said.

Monday is the last date for filing nomination for the first phase of election on April 11 in Tezpur, Kaliabor, Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Dibrugarh.
