A Guwahati court on Wednesday extended the police remand of vice-chancellor of Assam Don Bosco University, Father Stephen Mavely, by two days.

Father Stephen was arrested on Tuesday morning on charges of abetting the suicide of George Bordoloi, the proprietor of the George’s Retreat Eco Camp under the Sonapur Police Station here.

Bordoloi was found hanging from a tree around 8am on Monday within the campus of the resort.

The Sonapur police had booked Father Stephen under IPC Section 306 (abetment of suicide) after his name figured in a purported suicide note written by the deceased 65-year-old.

Patrick Bordoloi, the son of the deceased, had also lodged an FIR on Monday night against the Father, who is also the founder VC of the private varsity established in 2008.

On Tuesday, Father Stephen, 72, was produced before the chief judicial magistrate’s court, Kamrup Metro, which sent him to a day’s police custody even though the police had sought his custody for five days.

A police officer, who is associated with the case, told The Telegraph that Father Stephen was produced before the CJM court on Wednesday which extended his police custody by two days. Details were unavailable.

In the purported suicide note, George said a court summons issued to him and Patrick on the basis of a complaint lodged by Mavely was false.

The deceased had also stated Father Stephen had accused the duo of trespassing into the varsity campus and destroying rubber and coconut trees.

Denying the charges, the suicide note further stated, “Father Stephen Mavely therefore should be held responsible for abetting my suicide.”

A statement issued by the varsity on Tuesday confirmed an ongoing litigation in the court with the deceased over a boundary dispute.

“The university wishes to inform its faculty, staff, students and all stakeholders that Fr Stephen or any other officer of the university are not in any way involved in this dispute, after the said petition was filed in Guwahati courts,” the statement said.

Father Stephen, who hails from Kerala, is a former principal of St Anthony’s College in Shillong.
