The Assam University in Silchar constituted an eight-member inquiry committee on Saturday to probe the allegation of the students against the assistant registrar.

The imbroglio continued in the university after the students and scholars locked the administrative office and the official chambers of vice-chancellor, registrar and finance officer in protest against the alleged misbehaviour of assistant registrar Pinak Pani Nath Purkayastha on January 14.

Vice-chancellor Dilip Chandra Nath and other officials were locked in the chamber till 3am on Thursday. They left the room after the intervention of the district administration and police but the students continued their agitation. On Friday, they locked the entire administrative block.

The students have decided to continue their agitation till the release of the inquiry report. They have given January 20 deadline for the report.

The meeting on Saturday was held between university officials and students.

The members of Assam University Students’ Union and Assam University Research Scholar Forum are leading the agitation.

President of the forum Milan Das said they would wait till the release of inquiry report but if the report is not found satisfactory, they might intensify their agitation.

The president of the union, Biswarup Bhattacharjee, said the assistant registrar misbehaved during a discussion over the service of housekeeping in the university.

Viswavidyalaya Suraksha Samiti expressed concern over repeated disruption of classes and official work in the university due to strike.

The university on Friday issued a notice asking the students to unlock the offices but the students refused and continue their strike.
