Flood-hit Assam is mulling augmenting its disaster response forces from neighbouring states in case the situation worsens even as an ISRO team is carrying out rapid damage assessment in Dima Hasao district using drones and satellite data.

The flood situation in Assam improved marginally on Friday, according to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Flood and landslides triggered by heavy rain have affected 29 Assam districts and claimed 10 lives, affecting a population of over 8,12,619.

The Assam government has already requisitioned the help of the army, Indian Air Force, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the SDRF to help in rescue and relief efforts.

The Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on Friday night that it was contemplating to bring in response forces from nearby states if the situation becomes more critical. It said it was also using 800 Aapda Mitras and 88 circle-level quick response teams across Assam in search-and-rescue operations.

Aapda Mitras are trained volunteers who act as first responders during disasters.
