A four-member team from Assam camping in Chennai since September 3 finally managed to examine the health of Joymala, a female elephant allegedly held captive in a temple in Tamil Nadu.

The development follows Gauhati High Court directive to the Tamil Nadu government on Friday to allow the visiting team of Assam officials to “inspect” the health condition of Joymala within three days of receiving its order.

Joymala was taken to Tamil Nadu on September 8, 2011, permitting the animal to be retained in the Nachiyar temple in Virudhunagar district for three years.

Sources told The Telegraph the inspection on Monday lasted for around two-and-half hours at the temple where the elephant was kept.

The Tamil Nadu government had extended all cooperation to the team, but details of the inspection were not revealed because the report will be submitted to the court, the sources said.
