The Assam chief minister’s office (CMO) has requested the vice-chancellors of state universities to submit an action taken report on the eviction of all unauthorised hostel boarders by December 10.
The CMO missive was prompted by the Dibrugarh University ragging case in which a first-semester M.Com student, Anand Sharma, had severely injured his spinal cord on November 27 trying to escape the “extreme mental and physical torture” inflicted on him by a group of seniors in his hostel.
The principal secretary to the chief minister had written to all vice-chancellors on December 3 about the chief minister’s “desire” to immediately evict unauthorised hostel borders to ensure a “proper academic environment”.
The three-para letter pointed out that former students or hostel boarders continuing to stay in hostels or institutions under the university even after completion of their course “may lead to vitiation of the hostel environment as well as indiscipline along with the possibility of undesirable activities”.
