Around 4.30am that day, he was injured in an IED blast triggered by Naxals.

Altogether 15 soldiers were critically injured in the incident.

Along with Kalita, two other soldiers, Mijanur Rahman from Boko in Kamrup district and Sambhu Mallah from Hojai in Assam, were also injured.

All the injured were immediately airlifted and admitted to Bhagwan Mahavir Medica Super Specialty Hospital in Ranchi.

Kalita’s right leg was reportedly amputated in hospital.

He was then transferred through air ambulance on June 4 to the AIIMS, Delhi, for better treatment.

His left hand was also amputated there following increasing infections.

Kalita’s colleague Mijanur Rahman, Nitul Barman and his younger sister’s husband, Pankaj Kalita, alleged that Sunil lost his life due to lack of proper treatment and negligence in the Ranchi hospital.

Kalita was born on February 1, 1987. He completed his higher secondary education and diploma in pharmacy and joined the CRPF in Guwahati in 2011.

After completing his training in Allahabad, he was posted in Srinagar in 2012-15. In 2016, Kalita joined the 209 CoBRA Battalion in Khulti district of Jharkhand, 20km from Ranchi.

Kalita got married on April 10 this year.

His younger sister’s husband Pankaj said Kalita was very popular as a kind and well-behaved person.

He is survived by his parents, wife, younger sister and brother. All the villagers are mourning his death.
