The flood situation in Assam, where 86 people have died in the current wave of deluge, improved considerably on Tuesday as water levels in all major rivers started receding and no death was reported in the past 24 hours.

A statement of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said 13 districts are still affected impacting 7.92 lakh people, of whom 30,925 are taking shelter in 485 relief camps. The Brahmaputra is still flowing above the danger level at Neematighat in Jorhat and in Dhubri, the Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat and the Kushiara in Karimganj.

There were reports of a landslide at Mahur-Laisong road in Dima Hasao district while erosion continued in Jorhat, Udalguri, South Salmara-Mankachar and Sonitpur districts, leaving the administration worried.

Floodwaters have damaged 47 roads in Barpeta, Jorhat and Kokrajhar districts, besides 23,260 fish ponds in Barpeta.

Flood relief: Conservation biologist of Aaranyak, Purnima Devi Barman, was among prominent individuals/organisations who contributed on Tuesday. by donating Rs 25,000 to the chief minister’s relief fund. The other donors included Hyundai Motor India Foundation, which gave Rs 1 crore, Prerana, the IAS Officers’ Wives Association, handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakh, Guwahati Refinery Staff Institute donated Rs 5 lakh, the Assam Fisheries Development Corporation Rs 11 lakh, various organisations from Sonowal Kachari gave Rs 2.19 lakh, the Assam Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Service Association Rs 1 lakh, Concept Junior College, Nagaon, Rs 1 lakh, Duliajan Numaligarh Pipeline Ltd chairman Rupam Goswami Rs 10 lakh, Makhibaha Gramonnayan Samiti Rs 10,000, Akhil Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad Rs 50,050, PWD canteen, Fancy Bazar, Rs 1 lakh, industrialists Abani Sarbeswar Das and Daksha Abani Das Rs 1.01 lakh and Arabinda Deka Rs 1 lakh. Sipajhar and Lumding legislators Binanda Saikia and Sibu Mishra contributed one month’s salary. Thowra and Dhemaji legislators Kushal Dowari and Ranoj Pegu also contributed to the relief fund.

In Dhubri district, 69,463 people taking shelter in 181 relief camps returned to their homes on Monday evening.

District disaster management officer M. Sarkar said, “The water levels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries have come down near the danger mark. With this, houses along the banks of the rivers are now safe.”

Purnima Sah, a student of class IX of Jawahar Hindi High School here said she and her family had to take shelter along the railway tracks between Dhubri and Gauripur on July 15. Tinku Bin, a resident of Dubaichar, said all six members of his family had taken shelter in the Assam Sangha Hall in Dhubri town.

District administration officials are carrying out assessment of loss of property and damage. After completing the groundwork, the flood-affected people will receive financial assistance, sources said.
